  • He bit her at 3 to kiss her at 22

Our "how we met" story is actually two stories because I (Lani) have zero recollection of our first meeting. Garrett remembers being introduced to me when I was a year old and he was 3. He says he clearly remembers thinking I was cute and leaning in to bite me on the cheek- which didn't exactly sweep me off my feet as he had hoped. In fact, he left me in tears. I'm not sure what was wrong with me... After all, what girl doesn't love a good bite on the cheek? However, lucky for him I suppose, I have no memory of the incident. In fact, the first time I remember meeting him was when I was 12 years old. We were at a large school event and I saw him from across the room, but never found the courage to approach him.

Fast forward 8 years later. On January 10th, 2018 we both left Oklahoma on the same day, heading opposite directions- literally coast to coast, in fact. I drove West to live in California while he ventured East to attend Liberty University in Virginia. God needed us to be as far as possible from one another... well, for a little while longer, anyway. Just before Christmas of '18 Garrett messaged me. We hadn't seen each other in years, and truthfully had never even had a real conversation past pleasantries. Nevertheless, he asked when I'd be back in town and suggested we get coffee when I am. Surprised, but excited, I agreed.

When I came into town for Christmas Garrett, Morgan (his sister), and I had made plans to attend an OU football watch party, visit the Gathering Place, AND get coffee. From swinging on the children's swingset at the park, to Garrett explaining the rules of football, to me finding casual ways to sit near him- it was perfect. We had only that day together before I flew back to L.A., but distance didn't keep us from talking nonstop. Our conversations quickly deepened and so did our feelings. Within a month we were "meeting in the middle" in Dallas, and seeing each other for the first time as boyfriend and girlfriend though we'd never even been on a real date. Traditional? no. Perfect? yes.

Things, obviously, moved very quickly following Dallas. After all... when you know, you know. In fact, we've each revealed now that we knew within the first two weeks of just "talking" that the other was the one. God's timing is so funny, and yet so beyond perfect. We've known each other our entire lives, our paths have crossed countless times at birthday parties, events, and random encounters, yet God chose to keep us apart until He knew the timing would be perfect- and it has been. We spent last year on opposite sides of the country, each going through very seperate, difficult seasons which God used strategically to mold us into the people He knew we would need to be in order to care for the other. He allowed us to look right at each other for 20 years until He knew we were ready to open our eyes.

So, we would love for you to join us in the 20 year long awaited wedding of Garrett Randol & Lani Baker.
