  • Minority Grants Help Cover College Costs

Minority students often have a challenging time covering the costs of college, and this lack of funds sometimes serves as an obstacle to higher education. If you fall into this category, however, you may be surprised at how many opportunities are available for funding your education through minority grants.

    Grants for Specific Minority Groups

The first place minority students may want to check out for college education funds are organizations dedicated to them. For example, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) offers access to several different minority grants and scholarship programs. Plus, they support 39 colleges across the United States which provide lower than average tuition. UNCF also offers scholarships for minority students choosing to attend those colleges, such as Xavier University in New Orleans or Spelman College in Atlanta.

Through the Hispanic College Fund, students can also find available sources of money to pay for their tuition. For example, one of the scholarships is funded by Google and is awarded to a student who is majoring in computer science and who has at least a 3.5 GPA. Through the HCF, applicants for scholarships must have at least a 3.0 GPA to qualify for any of the scholarships available.

The American Indian College Fund offers about 6,000 different scholarships to students yearly. They have several programs for undergraduate and graduate students.

All of these organizations provide a good starting point for minority grants searches, but they aren’t the only place to find them.

    Other Sources for Minority Grants

One of the most well-known sources for grants is the Gates Millennium Scholars program. The program is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and offers financial grants to 1,000 students each year. The program is open to students from many different minority groups, including African-Americans, American Indians, Hispanic Americans, and Asian Pacific Americans. To qualify they must be preparing to attend college or already attending. They need to have at least a 3.3 GPA and must be pursuing one of several majors: computer science, education, math, engineering, library science, or science.

Engineering students can also apply for scholarships through the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME). African American, Hispanic American, and American Indian students are eligible to apply for the 1,500 awards given out each year. These minority grants range from $2,500 to full tuition so they can be a lucrative source of funds for students interested in this area of study.

Additionally, many colleges and universities offer their own grant and scholarship programs to encourage more minority students to attend so they can diverse their student populations.

If you are searching for minority grants, talk to your financial aid counselor about additional options that may be available through the school or through the state programs.
